The Platysma muscle is the root of a common problem facing many people, the dreaded double chin. However the platysma muscle is also an intricate part of how we make facial expressions. But what exactly is the platysma muscle?
The Platysma muscle is a facial muscle that extends from underneath your chin down your neck in a sidewise manner, and wrapping around from your upper chest (pectorals major) to your upper back (deltoid). These fibers help to partially open and close your mouth, and to create facial expressions resulting from our emotions (like frowning out of sadness). Additionally these fibers can expand the diameter of the neck when your breathing very hard as can happen in an aerobic workout.
Traditionally, the platysma muscle is very tight and toned especially in ones youth. However, as we get older it can loose some of it’s tone and can create a double chin if it is not maintained properly. It is essential to put some effort into keeping the platysma muscle toned through the safe and natural methods of diet and exercise.
