One of the ways to remove a double chin is by the plastic surgery procedure known as submental lipectomy.
Many people develop double chins as they get older because their skin looses the elasticity that it needs to stay firmly attached to the underlying muscle layer. Double chins are also caused by an excess of fatty tissue in the area beneath the chin, and having a double chin can cause a person to appear chubbier and older than they really are. It is, however, fairly easy to correct a double chin through the cosmetic surgical process called submental lipectomy.
Submental lipectomy comprises liposuction of the neck and jowl areas where fatty tissue is removed from beneath the chin through one of the several liposuction methods currently in use. In traditional lipo surgery, small incisions are made into the skin beneath the chin through which a cannula is inserted to break down the fact. Once the fat is broken down, it is then suctioned out with an aspirator. Non-traditional liposuction techniques may also be used including ultrasonic liposuction or techniques like the non-invasive mesotherapy where the fat is dissolved through being treated with certain compounds and then eliminated naturally along with other bodily waste.
During a traditional liposuction submental lipectomy, the surgeon also has the option to cut through the bands of muscle found in the neck that causes an aging neck’s characteristic ropey look. In these cases, the submental lipectomy could be combined with a standard cheek or neck lift in order to tighten the skin all across the face and neck area. Submental lipectomies without an accompanying neck or cheek lift will work best on people whose skin shows a greater degree of elasticity than normal as supple skin is able to snap back into place far more easily than inflexible skin.
A further option would be for a surgeon to perform a chin enhancement or reduction procedure during the submental lipectomy so that all chin defects are resolved during one operation.
A submental lipectomy is an easy and relatively inexpensive procedure for removing a double chin that has a high rate of success.
