Double Chin Surgery

by Jared Rothe

Men and women of any age can be plagued with a double chin. A chin can turn into a double chin for a few different reasons. And a double chin can be taken care of a number of ways as well. Here I will describe the different causes of a double chin and also the different ways a double chin can be gotten rid of, including surgery.

A double chin can be present from a young age, or it can creep up on a person as they age. It can be hereditary and is also a symptom of weight gain. Rapid weight gain is the number one reason for a double chin. Age follows as the second biggest reason. The most troubling thing about a double chin is that it can be hard to get rid of it once it has made its presence known.

The most well known ways to get rid of a double chin is by diet and exercise. This is the best way to get rid of any excess weight a person may have and boosts health levels in general. But when diet and exercise do not work, as it usually will not when the double chin is hereditary then surgery can be the next best option.

Double chin surgery has become a relatively routine surgery and is quick to perform. There a few different types of surgery to choose form. There is a partial face lift, a chin tuck, and liposuction. The face lift and chin tuck options are very effective but have proven to have longer recovery times and other painful side effects. Liposuction, also called mentoplasty, is usually the best choice when it comes to double chin surgery. It can be done outpatient with minimal scarring and is a common procedure.

The doctor starts by giving a local anesthetic and making two small incisions along the jaw line. Then the cannula is inserted to loosen the fat along the jaw line. Fluid is then injected while suctioning out the fat to make it easier to remove. After the fat is removed, a chin implant may be used to give the appearance of a better, softer profile. Then the incisions are sutured and an elastic bandage is applied to keep the chin muscles form sagging. In more involved procedures, the muscles of the jaw can also be tightened and smoothed to give the appearance of a tighter chin overall. A newer procedure called the Tumescent Technique is rapidly becoming the most sought after double chin surgery procedure. It is the same liposuction procedure as described above, but with less bleeding, bruising and recovery time.

The cost for the double chin surgery can range from $2,000 to $4,500, depending on how involved the actual surgery is. The cost can usually be financed, making it an option for anyone with any kind of budget. The best options and results usually come form a Board Certified, licensed physician and is always recommended to not choose to undergo any surgery otherwise.
